Olympian Olive Ode

A salty breeze
blew from the sea
against rocky mountain soil.
Gnarled and distressed,
but undoubtebly blessed,
grew a tree with the most luscious oil.
Fit to anoint the chosen one,
this elixer of life supplies everyone.
Cultivated or wild,
for grandfather or child,
the gift of the olive has come.
For food and as fuel,
in cosmetics, perfumes,
no finer substance prevails.
In healing the sick,
it makes them well quick.
Above all is the olive regaled.
So, when we give an olive wreath,
we mean to bring an end to grief,
acknowledging the work you’ve done
promoting peace for everyone.
Olympiad, you’ve run your race,
ascending to a state of grace.
Sweat and tears so hot they boil
made you rich and smooth as olive oil.

Agile Root

The olive and the man
hold an eternal bond,
like the twining of two strands
has made a rope so strong.
Into the barren soil,
the olive’s agile roots
find anchor and make transfer,
to offer man her fruits.
Lifting yourself up, olive,
we all arise.
You achieve through adversity,
and we are so inspired
To reach even higher
toward Mount Olympus’ lofty peaks.
May the favored one who Zeus adores
wear your branches as a wreath.
The man and his olive tree,
a union predisposed,
alive in peace and harmony
farther back than memory goes.
So, far into the future,
we will pass her flame,
honoring Athena’s wisdom
at every Olympic game.

O’Live!

Twisting,turning
burning, yearning,
inside they are coming alive!
Stretching, struggling,
cheering, hugging,
the time for the games has arrived!
Serious and sacred,
glistening and naked,
the athletes touch the sky!
Bless Athena, Apollo,
The Olympics and Olives,
see who will win the prize:
A crowning wreath
of olive leaf,
victory shines in their eyes.
The olive has fed us,
healed us and blessed us.
Her oil has lighted the night.
Proudly her branches
adorn our contestants
who perform like a shot out of sight!
Olives bring strength and prosperity:
our symbol of peace for eternity.
Like any true gift of any amount,
it’s the meaning behind the thought that counts.
